Why is the government preoccupying itself with problems in sports rather than real issues?

I see Congress is now getting involved in the SpyGate scandal with the Patriots. With this and with the steroid witchhunt that Congress ran in baseball, it seems as though they’re devoting a lot of time to sports rather than focusing on the war in the Middle East or health care problems or the struggling economy. I’m truly hoping someone can come up with a legitimate reason for this, I’d be interested.
